چکیده

This paper discusses aspects of a functional grammar for Machine Translation (MT). We present a restricted approach to some central issues of "diathesis/ alternations" of predicate-argument structures on a level of "Interface Structure" (IS) for multi-lingual machine translation. The approach generalizes a set of morphosyntactic phenomena into a set of "diathesis" features with specified interactions with other features at IS. The aim of conforming with the overriding goal of simple transfer is discussed. We suggest extensions to the restricted approach to make it more compatible with ongoing work in knowledge-based MT and in text generation. 1 I am grateful to my EUROTRA colleagues Nuria Bel, Mounira Loughraieb, Lee Humphreys, Ursula Reuther, Sibylle Rieder, Anne Becker, and Randy Sharp for critical support in various ways. Recently, I have also profited through critical feedback by John Bateman, Bob Kasper, Leo Wanner, Elke Teich and Elisabeth Maier. I am alone responsible for any remaining weaknesses.

Parsing Turkish with the Lexical Functional Grammar Formalism

This paper describes our work on parsing Turk-ish using the lexical-functional grammar formalism. This work represents the first effort for parsing Turkish. Our implementation is based on Tomita's parser developed at Carnegie-Mellon University Center for Machine Translation. The grammar covers a substantial subset of Turkish including simple and complex sentences, and deals with a reasonable am...

A Comparative Study of English-Persian Translation of Neural Google Translation

Many studies abroad have focused on neural machine translation and almost all concluded that this method was much closer to humanistic translation than machine translation. Therefore, this paper aimed at investigating whether neural machine translation was more acceptable in English-Persian translation in comparison with machine translation. Hence, two types of text were chosen to be translated...

TIGER TRANSFER Utilizing LFG Parses for Treebank Annotation

Creation of high-quality treebanks requires expert knowledge and is extremely time consuming. Hence applying an already existing grammar in treebanking is an interesting alternative. This approach has been pursued in the syntactic annotation of German newspaper text in the TIGER project. We utilized the large-scale German LFG grammar of the PARGRAM project for semi-automatic creation of TIGER t...

Using F-structures in Machine Translation Evaluation

Despite a growing interest in automatic evaluation methods for Machine Translation (MT) quality, most existing automatic metrics are still limited to surface comparison of translation and reference strings. In this paper we show how Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) labelled dependencies obtained from an automatic parse can be used to assess the quality of MT on a deeper linguistic level, giving...
